Tell us a little bit about Kensico Soap Bar, your background and the inspirations behind your amazing business.
I’ve always loved science and after college, I landed my dream job as a biologist in a local company. Part of my work in the lab included working with local high school students and helping them create their own research projects. Every year, I looked forward to sharing and explaining the research experience with the latest students. After I lost my dream job in 2011, I wanted to start a business that was family friendly and could be a part of my local community. During soap making classes in the city, I realized that soap making had the elements of science that I enjoyed – creating, working with kids, and making something new.
How would you describe a typical party at Kensico Soap Bar?
A birthday party should be good clean fun for everyone. The children enjoy the whole process of making their own soap. There is a variety of molds, colors, scents, and toys that the children use during a party. While the children are busy, I want the parents to relax and enjoy watching the children create, so we take care of the food, serving, and best of all – cleaning up!
What do you find children most enjoy about making soaps?
I think the best part is the end of the party, when each child sees their creation come out of the mold. They can’t wait to show their parents and ask if they can use it when they get home.
What are your favorite scents?
I love anything citrus! It is so refreshing to me. However, I enjoy bringing out fun scents for the kids, such as Jolly Rancher, Bubble Gum, or the one guaranteed to bring a giggle from everyone – Monkey Farts!
What is the best part of your job?
Watching people create something unique!
